Early career – mission and weapon design on a genre landmark

MechWarrior 3: Pirate's Moon is the expansion pack for MechWarrior 3, developed by Zipper Interactive and published by MicroProse. It added 20 new missions, six new mechs, new weapons, and new terrain types – playable from both the Inner Sphere and Pirate campaign perspectives.

This was an early career credit – one of my first roles in the industry. I worked as a designer on the expansion, contributing mission design and weapon design within the BattleTech universe's established rules and lore.

Design contributions

  • Mission design Designed missions for the expansion's campaign – objectives, enemy placement, pacing, and the moment-to-moment decision points that made individual missions memorable. MechWarrior's mission design had to account for the simulation's depth: players managing heat, ammo, and limb damage while navigating terrain and engaging multiple targets.
  • Weapon design Designed new weapons within the BattleTech universe's established rules – balancing damage, heat generation, range, and ammo consumption against the existing arsenal. Weapon design in a simulation requires understanding how additions shift the meta of player loadout decisions, not just what the new item does in isolation.
