The cover system that influenced a generation of shooters

Kill Switch is a third-person tactical shooter released in 2003 by Namco. It introduced a cover-and-blind-fire system – the ability to press against walls and obstacles, shoot from cover without exposing yourself, and move between cover positions under fire – that became a template for the genre.

The mechanics Kill Switch introduced showed up directly in major franchises in the years that followed. The cover system went from a novel feature to an industry standard. As Producer and Lead Designer, I was responsible for both the design of those systems and the production of the title.

Design contributions

  • Cover and blind-fire system Designed the core mechanic that defined Kill Switch – the ability to snap to cover, shoot blind around corners, and move tactically between positions. The system had to feel intuitive enough for players to adopt immediately while offering enough depth for skilled play to emerge. The goal was making cover feel like a genuine extension of the player's body rather than a mode they entered.
  • AI behavior design Designed enemy AI that understood and responded to the cover system – flanking logic, suppression behavior, and squad tactics that made the cover mechanics meaningful. An AI that doesn't pressure your cover position makes the system feel cosmetic. An AI that pushes intelligently makes it feel essential.
  • Combat and encounter design Designed the combat systems and encounter structures that put the cover mechanics under pressure – pacing, enemy composition, spatial layouts, and escalation across the campaign.
  • Production leadership Led production alongside design – managing the design department, coordinating execution with engineering and art, and delivering the title on schedule.
