Co-op dungeon crawler – designed from a blank page

Hunted: The Demon's Forge is a co-op action RPG developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. Players control two mercenaries – a warrior and an archer – through a dark fantasy world, with mechanics designed around complementary playstyles and co-operative combat.

I joined inXile to work on Hei$t, but my early contribution to Hunted was foundational. I created the design bible from scratch and built the initial prototype that was used to secure the publishing deal with Bethesda. That greenlight prototype was the first playable articulation of what Hunted was.

Design contributions

  • Design bible Created the design bible from scratch – the foundational document that defined Hunted's mechanics, tone, combat philosophy, and player experience goals. A design bible written at the start of a project sets the creative contract the whole team works from. Building it from a blank page on a new IP required making strong early decisions about what kind of game this would be and what it wouldn't.
  • Greenlight prototype Built the initial prototype used to secure the publishing deal – a playable demonstration of Hunted's core loop, combat feel, and co-op dynamic. The prototype was the pitch made tangible, turning a design bible into something a publisher could actually play and evaluate.
  • Core combat and encounter systems Designed the foundational combat mechanics and encounter structures – melee and ranged combat systems, enemy behavior, and the co-op dynamic between the warrior and archer roles.
